The original Mandarin Restaurant was opened in Beaverdale, in 1978, where it hosted thousands of wonderful, unforgettable memories such as: weddings, birthdays, family reunions, graduation parties, as well as a few not-so-wonderful memories, such as when the floods of 1995 and 2008 victimized the Mandarin. The Mandarin has always been known for its unwavering and flawless marriage of essential Asian flavors. Chinese chef Kevin Liu has spent more than half his life perfecting flavors that bring everyone back to the “real Asia”.
In 1988, Kevin and Joanne Liu took over the restaurant with his mother Sue Liu, while his sister Jade & her husband Kevin Chyan opened their own Chinese restaurant in Macomb, Illinois called Yen Ching. Their restaurant remained open for 17 years and chef Kevin Chyan was locally established as a master culinary artist, introducing new Asian cuisines to his restaurant’s loyal guests; many traveling over 3 hours to sample his creations. Sue Liu remains a culinary monarch, hand-making appetizers from scratch and always teaching those around her about the “old country”, & how all great Chinese food begins with fresh ingredients, skillful hands, & a passion for eating.
